The first clinical implantation of a sutureless valve in our Hospital!

On 13 and 14 January, 2005 Prof. Jerzy Sadowski assisted by Dr. Boguslaw Kapelak at the Clinical Ward of Cardiovascular Surgery and Transplantology implanted the first sutureless valve in three patients.
The operation lasted less than one minute. The standard mechanical or tissue heart valve takes about 35-45 minutes to suture in place. The new product provides the same result in less than 50 seconds, thus limiting the risk of lethal complications. It is especially recommended for high-risk patients who otherwise would not qualify for valve replacement. It is a chance for people who used to be referred to as mortally ill, says Prof. Sadowski.
The new valve is made of the horse pericardial sac by the American team supervised by James Cox and Tino Quijano. The Krakow investigational center was chosen for the implantation as the biggest and most modern cardiac surgery center (it performs about 650 valve implantations annually). In January 2006 another three sutureless valves were successfully implanted. The 3F valves are planned to be introduced into clinical practice very soon.
