History:

The Department of Cardiac and Vascular Diseases was established in 1981 by decision of the Medicine Faculty Council of the School of Medicine in Kraków. Today the Department is one of the leading cardiology centers in Poland where many renown specialists have been trained.

Diagnostic and treatment capabilities:

This 44-bed ward, including 6 beds of intensive care, is equipped with the newest diagnostic systems of ergospirometry, echocardiography, exercise testing and Holter monitoring. The ward admits patients with ischemic heart disease for invasive (PTCA, PTA) and conservative treatment based on the results of coronary angiography, myocardial scintigraphy, echocardiography, stress testing, and imaging using MSCT and CMR; patients with myocarditis and cardiomyopathy; patients with renal artery stenosis and congenital heart disease. We carry out studies on long-term outcomes of surgical and nonsurgical treatment. We specialize in interventions for relapses after coronary artery bypass grafting, we offer spiroergometric tests for patients qualifying for heart transplantation and breath nitric oxide test for patients with pulmonary hypertension. We provide a sports medicine program. The ward admits about 1500 patients annually, and the Outpatient Department provides about 10 000 consultations a year. Most hospitalized patients undergo invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures.
