In 1971 the Ward of Heart Defects opened in the grounds of Dr. Anka Hospital and provided right-heart catheterization. In 1979 the ward transformed into the Department of Hemodynamics and Angiocardiography and became part of the Institute of Cardiology. In 1997 the Department was modernized and consisted of four angiographic rooms. In 2004 it expanded and transformed into the Cardiovascular Intervention Center. The Center provides a wide range of endovascular treatment options for patients with disorders of coronary and peripheral arteries and of the aorta. In 2007 a team of specialized emergency medicine was formed to help patients with thoracic and cardiovascular diseases, thus increasing access to modern treatment in Malopolska Province. We expect to develop further the integrated specialized emergency medicine under the Malopolska Regional Operational Program.

Diagnostic and Treatment Capabilities:

The Center has 4 fully equipped operating rooms with 16 beds, including 8 intensive care units: open 24 hours a day. In 1999 we started the acute chest pain program for interventional treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes. The Center is open 24 hours a day providing interventional services for Krakow and South-Eastern Poland. The Center performs annually 8000-10000 diagnostic procedures such as coronary angiography and bypass angiography, peripheral artery angiography, endomyocardial biopsy, left- and right-heart catheterization, and the following therapeutic procedures: angioplasty of coronary, carotid, subclavian, lower extremity and renal arteries; rotablation; transmyocardial laser revascularization; alcohol ablation in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; percutaneous closure of septal defects. We admit about 2500 patients.
